Release date is crucial to churn out a hit!

Hat trick star Karthi in a recent interview to a popular magazine said: �The success of a film today depends on its publicity, distribution and timing, apart from having a decent content and a good script�.

On May 28, the big movie of the week was undoubtedly Suriya�s Sun Pictures marketed Singam. But along with that two small films were released Kattrathu Kalavu and Kaadhalaagi.

There was no need for these two films to come in the same week as Singam, was promoted aggressively by Sun Pictures with the star power of Suriya and director Hari. With Singam turning out to be a hit, the chances of the other two films clicking are remote.

The above case clearly indicates that date and time of release is very important. It is sad to see the year-long effort of the producer, artiste and technicians and huge investment going down the drain just because of wrong timing of the film�s release. Had these films came on June 4 or June 11 it could have managed to get a solo release and better reach.

The success of Paiyaa can be attributed to release date, apart from boasting of hit songs, high level publicity, star power and a hit director. It was released solo on April 2 and the next big film Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam came on May 7, thus giving a clear window of five weeks.

In Bollywood, the date of release of all the medium and big budget films have already been frozen and announced till December 2010 as per trade magazines and a small producer can easily plan for his film release based on such data.

However, such clarity is not there in Tamil films as most of the producers do not have any clue of their release date. Tamil Nadu Film Producer Council has advocated big films must be released on festival days and not more than two small films to be released on the other weeks. But in reality no one is following the rule and each one has a reason for rushing the release. If only things are done in a more professional manner, then the Kollywood is sure to boom.
